For many, the end of the school year can’t come soon enough.  For some families in the Hudson Valley though, the end of the school year brings uncertainty and stress as it also means the end of school meals. During the summer months, thousands of children go hungry.

According to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley and Feeding Ameria, 16.3% of children in Orange County (15,980 children), 16% of kids in Ulster County (5,370 kids), and 11.4% of children in Putnam County (2,420 kids) are food insecure, meaning they have limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate food. But there is help on the way.

The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley will be providing free meals to all children aged 18 or younger starting  June 25 at sites around the Hudson Valley as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program:

  • In Highland Falls, food will be served at Roe Park Monday through Friday from 11 to 1 starting June 25 throughAugust 10, they will be closed on the 4th of July.
  • For those in Carmel, Kent Public Library, 17 Sybil’s Crossing, will serve food every Friday from noon until 1 starting July 6 and running through August 31.
  • In Accord, for Town of Rochester Summer Program participants, food will be available at Town of Rochester, 15 Tobacco Road in Accord, every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 2 starting July 10 and continuing through August 23.
