New York State Police Announce K9 Retirement

The New York State Police took to social media to wish their latest retiree a happy retirement. However, this retiree is a bit different than what you're probably thinking.

On Facebook, the NYS Police announced March 28th, 2025 would be Troop K9 Dunn's final day on patrol "marking the end of an incredible career with Troop K’s narcotics K9 unit."

After 7 years on the jobs, K9 Dunn has built up an impressive resume.

In the statement on social media we learn that K9 Dunn has worked with Trooper Edward E. Reiser for his career.

During that time, K9 Dunn has played a crucial role with the New York State Police. According to the post K9 Dunn has take part in "Hundreds of seizures, including illegal firearms and large quantities of narcotics."

K9 Dunn also assisted in "Multiple fugitive apprehensions" and in his career helped recover "Over $10 million in narcotic-related U.S. currency."

Someone get, K9 Dunn a pup cup! That's one very good boy. Congratulations K9 Dunn on a phenomenal career! As K9 Dunn heads to the retirement life, K9 Vinn will take over his duties.

K9 Vinn is named after Trooper Vincent A. Dunn.

New Dutchess County K9 Welcomed to Sheriff's Office

In other K9 news, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office announced in early March the addition of the first Electronic Storage Detection K9 to the team.

K9 Bear has a unique set of skills. The Black Lab is certified to detect the odor of "the chemical component Triphenylphosphine Oxide which is used in the manufacturing of electronics to prevent overheating."

Bear will use his skills to locate hidden electronics "such as smart phones, hard drives, thumb drives, cameras, GPS devices and micro-SD cards."

Not only will Bear be used for electronic detection, Bear was cross trained as a comfort support dog for victims and children, as well as serving as a wellness dog for members at the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office and in the community.
