Don't Worry, The Next Tropical Storm Will be Easier to Pronounce

The storm has finally passed, but what can we expect next?

That sounded a bit daunting, but I'm not talking about another COVID-19 wave. I am, however, talking about our next Tropical Storm. While I'm not sure when we'll be seeing one, I do know for a fact that the next Tropical Storm or hurricane that heads our way will be much easier to pronounce.

All week long I've been hearing weather and news anchors pronounce Tropical Storm Isaias differently. Myself included. Listen, we tried our best.

So for future reference, I did a little research. With the help of the Old Farmers Almanac, I found the list of the names of the potential Tropical Storms and hurricanes for the rest of 2020.

According to the Farmers Almanac, Tropical Storms started receiving names back in 1953. At that time meteorologists had a hard time keeping track of different storms especially if there was more storm happening at once.

Here are some fun storm naming facts for you:

When storms first got their names they were just female names.
Male and female names were used by 1979.
There are 6 lists of 20 names that are "used in rotation and re-cycled every six years" according to NOAA.Gov
Storm names won't be used again if they are "so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity."

As for the Hudson Valley and future Tropical Storms, meteorologist Ben Noll is saying that we can be seeing some action in the second half of August.
