Should it be?

According to WTEN, a new bill in New York is inching closer to being passed by the State Assembly that would make it against the law to declaw a cat.

If you have a cat, you've probably had the discussion as to whether or not you should declaw your cat. If you don't know, declawing a cat is when the claws are removed from the cats paws to prevent the cat from scratching.

Many veterinarians and animal advocates say declawing a cat is inhumane since it involves the amputation of a cat's toes back to the first knuckle and New York's largest veterinary association has spoken out to say they are opposed to the bill. They told WTEN that the procedure should be allowed as a last resort for felines that won't stop scratching furniture or humans.

The bill was moved along on Tuesday and if it does pass, New York would be the first U.S. state to ban declawing. The act is already banned in the cities of Denver as well as 10 cities in the state of California.

The bill must still pass a second committee before going to the Assembly.
