A walk on a Sunday afternoon in late October, led to a surprising discovery by some Ulster County college students.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as the students walked along the shore of the Esopus Creek in Saugerties, they came across two eight-point deer. One was already dead, apparently after having been gored as a result of the two deer fighting. The other deer was still alive but was entangled in an old rope that was hanging from a tree.

The students immediately called the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and ECO Myles Schillinger responded to the scene. According to the DEC, Officer Schillinger, not wanting to get to close to the deer for both of their safety, used his bootlaces to tie his folding knife to a long pole. This enabled him, using extreme caution, to cut the deer loose.

The deer appeared to be unharmed and leaped into Esopus creek and swam to the other side and then disappeared into the trees. It's certainly not something you see everyday. Good job by everyone involved.
