Two Important Symbols In Two Months Stolen In New Paltz
I have never understood why someone would take something that doesn't belong to them. The idea of just helping yourself to something because you want it seems so selfish. I just wasn't brought up that way.
This makes it even more confusing for me when I see that people have taken something be it a prank or not that belongs to someone and is not an item left on a curb for free. This same principle applies when it comes to respecting people's property.
Two New Paltz Businesses Experience Theft of Tokens for Their Business
Over the last few weeks, there have been two incidents in New Paltz that are examples of what I am talking about. Both incidents involve items that are personal and that are symbols for the business. The first incident happened in late November when I person was filmed trying to knock over a black cat statue that sits in front of the Awareness Shop.
When they were unsuccessful at toppling the stature they stole the pentagram off it instead. Who does that? A Black cat on a Witch's front lawn? Call me superstitious but that is just not smart. Not sure how that all ended even though the person was on videotape.

This past week a second incident came to light when The Bangkok Cafe, a popular restaurant on Main Street in New Paltz posted that someone had taken a Monk Statue from the restaurant. The post that was put on Facebook mentioned that they had the person on camera. They asked that the statue be returned by Monday.

They also mentioned that the state contained a ghost and handling it wrong would lead to bad luck. I am going to say that taking it in the first place may have already led to that happening. So what is with the rash of people messing with other people's symbols and items meaningful to them and their business?

Whether it was the fear of a ghost bringing bad luck or the realization that taking the statue was wrong, the good news in this story is that the statue was returned at some point over the weekend. In my opinion, our local small business people have enough to deal with adding this type of disrespect is more than annoying, it is disheartening.
