With just under two weeks to go until Spring 2019 a lot of us may be thinking it is time to plan the "spring clean up" project. If you are like me you are gathering piles, rummaging through drawers and closets, looking for everything that must go. I have stored large garbage bags like a hoarder just so I am ready for the first nice day. That take care of the plan for inside the house but what about outside.

As the snow melts and we start to take stock in what Mother Nature has done to our yard this winter your first go to thought might be a burn pile. It seems easy enough. Just gather all those fallen limbs and left over brush clippings along with anything else that's burnable a set a match to it. Instant clean up, right? Maybe but not so fast with the burn it all up idea.

Before you go setting a winter's worth of stuff on fire outside in your yard you need to check in to the laws about burning in your area. Check in at your local fire department to see when the burn ban dates are in your area. Typically they are mid March to mid May.

It is also a go idea to read through the information the the New York State DEC has published on open burning. Brush fires are no joke this time of year. Setting your junk on fire could lead to a big disaster including fines if you don't follow the rules.

UPDATE: NYSDEC released dates for burn ban. March 16th through May 14, 2019
