New York Animal Rehab Takes In Another Staving Bear
Just because winter has set in doesn't mean our New York wildlife organizations have taken a break. Some of them get very busy this time of year.
Residents of the Hudson Valley often encounter wildlife in need of help in the winter. Suppose you encounter an animal in need of assistance. In that case, it is important to contact a wildlife organization such as Friends of the Feathered and Furry or the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Professionals know how to help.
Very Small Orphan Baby Bear Now in Rehab in New York
In recent weeks the Friends of the Feathered and Furry Woldlofe Center (FFFWC) in Hunter, New York have been called into action to help another orphan cub. This time the little one was only 12 pounds which is extremely underweight for the cub's estimated age.
This lucky cub will get to winter over with the FFFWC along with a few bears that arrived last fall.
Another Orphan Bear Club will Winter at Friends of the Feathered and Furry
We can speculate but don’t have the exact answers to why they were orphaned and staving but this little one and the other are safe now. Thanks to the many people who have spotted them and reached out to FFF. We are the ONLY NYS facility where bear cubs can be rehabbed. Please consider donating and help us give these bear cubs a second chance. (Friends of the Feather and Furry Wildlife Center via Facebook)
Late last Fall the FFFWC started rehabbing the two cubs in the video below which was shared on the FFFWC's Facebook page. They did so well that they were able to be moved to an outdoor enclosure in late November. One cub was found in Margaretville the other came from almost 3 hours away in Bakers Mill, New York. The plan is to look after them through the winter in order for them to grow which hopefully will lead to them being released back to the wild.
You might be thinking that this isn't the time of year you would run across a bear but it turns out that it is a possibility. Rare but possible sights of black bears in New York State this time of year can happen, especially when the weather gets warm.
Most bears we encounter in warmer months are tucked up in dens right now sleeping away the winter cold but there can be rare occasions that you come across a bear or its tracks if you are out on a winter hike. Just last week the Delaware Water Gap shared information for people who may be hiking in parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey to be cautious out hiking in Bear County.
