A six-year K-9 veteran of the Beacon Police Department had to be put to sleep on Friday.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal the dog Ike, won numerous awards, including two for apprehending dangerous felons who fled police while in possession of illegal handguns.

Officer Christian Alencastro, a 14-year Beacon police veteran, was Ike's handler and partner for years.

Ike and Alencastro worked a midnight shift on Wednesday, and by Thursday morning the officer rushed Ike to the vet due to stomach issues.

Ike had gastric dilatation and volvulus — a bloated, twisted stomach.

Beacon police are planning a service for Ike, which will likely take place in front of the station, and be open to the public.
