Back to School Driving Safety Tips

The 2025 school year is in full swing and drivers are getting used to the buses being back on the road after a quiet commute.

Before the school year started, the Department of Motor Vehicle and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee shared important safety tips for drivers and students.

DMV Commissioner, Mark J.F. Schroeder, said in a statement:

Drivers should always watch for children walking or riding bicycles to and from school and be prepared to stop for school buses. We urge parents to make sure their children know how to safely get on and off the bus.”

Bus safety is always a hot topic throughout the school year. According to the DMV over 50,000 drivers statewide pass stopped school buses with their flashing lights daily.

Safety tips for motorist include:

  • Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic
  • Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood.
  • Be distraction-free. Never use electronic devices while driving and be sure to actively focus on the road and your surroundings.

 Kingston Police Write a Surprising Amount of Tickets During Back to School Week

Now that the first 2 weeks of school are in the books, the City of Kingston is sharing details about their aggressive school zone traffic enforcement initiative.

On Wednesday September 3rd, 2025, and since then the Kingston Police Department's Traffic Safety Unity has been focusing on traffic enforcement in school zones.

Since the first day of school, there have been 149 vehicle stops, 139 traffic tickets written, 60 verbal warnings, 3 arrests and the Traffic Safety Unit assisted in 13 crashes.

Kingston Officials React to Traffic Safety Enforcement

In the statement Kingston Mayor, Steve Noble, explained that he went on a ride along and witnesses basic traffic safety laws being broken.

Mayor Noble said "I was able to ride along with the officers during their back-to-school enforcement efforts and witnessed firsthand how many folks are ignoring basic traffic safety in our school zones."

In his statement, Mayor Noble continues, by adding:

This behavior will not be tolerated and those who don’t obey traffic laws will be ticketed and face consequences

Kingston Police Chief Egidio Tinti adds "I am proud of the work we are doing and will continue to do to safeguard the community.”
