After trying skiing for the first time last year in Vermont, I've decided to try and take up skiing in 2025 more frequently.

While talking to a family friend about local ski locations, I learned that there used to be a popular ski area in Hopewell Junction. Have you ever heard of Mount Storm in Stormville, NY?

Is There An Abandoned Ski Resort in the Hudson Valley?

While it wasn't a big resort, there used to be a ski area in the Hopewell Junction area of Dutchess County.  Mount Storm Ski Area was opened in the 50s until it closed in 1987 after the lodge was burnt down by an alleged arsonists.

This is all according to the Lost Ski Areas Project website who has been collecting data and information about former ski areas across the US.

The site goes on to explain that Mount Storm has 3 main slopes with "interconnecting trails" and sat on 52 acres of land. Since Mt. Storm closed pieces of the ski area were still standing, at least back in 2007 when photos were shared on the website.

At one point there were bright lights added to the Mount Storm slopes for night skiing and those driving by were able to see the skiers from I-84.

Additionally, information gathered from the Mount Storm White Book listing explained that the Hopewell Junction mountain "had a 600 foot vertical drop" and was open 7 days a week.

Did you visit Mount Storm back in the day?

Did You Ski at Any of The Former Dutchess Count Ski Areas?

The Lost Ski Areas website seems to think that New York is "most likely home to the most lost ski areas in the country." They add that collecting the data has been a daunting task adding there are about 350 "lost areas in New York  alone."
