Yes, I realize that August has just begun, that this year's Ulster County Fair just started, and I haven't even mentioned back-to-school shopping. So, why, oh why, am I seemingly jumping ahead to deer season?

Well, believe it or not, it's actually not that far off and hunting and trapping licenses for the upcoming season will be available starting September first. To that end, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation want to make all hunters aware of a few changes for this upcoming season.

The DEC will be increasing the statewide distribution of Deer Management Permits for antlerless deer, about 11% more will be issued this year, you can see where they plan on allocating these, which could help you figure out your odds of getting one. The deadline for applying is October first.

In addition, when you apply for a hunting or trapping license this year, you will be asked to provide an email address. This will make it easier for the NYSDEC to notify hunters about license renewal, additional hunting opportunities, and if any changes are made to the regulations.

Here's to another safe and successful hunting and trapping season.
