Local Agencies Come Together To Help 2 Horses at Dutchess County Equine Rescue
2 Horses Get Stuck on Ice in Dutchess County
13 Hands Equine Rescue based out of Clinton Corners, New York in Dutchess County had a challenging start to the month of February.
The equine rescue wrote on Monday February 3rd, 2025, that 2 of their horses, an older mare and their cherished horse hitch found themselves stuck on the ice. Thankfully, local agencies and community members were able to get the horses up.
While the mare was brought to her feet with "minimal injury," Hitch had a harder time. 13 Hands explains that Hitch was showing signs that he wanted to get up "but his body just wasn't cooperating."
His fighting spirit was there and he wasn’t giving up, so neither was the amazing crew of people around him.
After an extremely difficult time getting Hitch on his feet, he was finally able to stand up on his own. However, Hitch needed further evaluation and was taken to Rhinebeck Equine for extended care. 13 Hands are currently "monitor his progress closely, and we’ll rely on Hitch and Rhinebeck’s amazing staff to guide us in making the best decisions for him."
Several Agencies Show Up To Help 2 Dutchess County Horses
According to the post from 13 Hands Equine Rescue, several agencies and members of the community came together to help their horses in need.
On Facebook they write:
We are incredibly grateful to the Stanfordville & Patterson Fire Departments, @rhinebeck_equine’s dedicated staff, NYS Troopers from Salt Point, Matt’s Autobody also from Salt Point, transport by Corrine Weber, and our many friends & family, for their unwavering support.

Help Hitch on His Road To Recover
While Hitch is recovering, his medical bills are piling up fast.
13 Hands added on social media, that Hitch isn't just a mascot to the rescue organization, he's a member of the 13 Hands family.
They go on to add that Hitch is just like a person to them, he's "highly intelligent, kind, and a true member of our family."
Hitch’s presence has touched the hearts of our entire community, and as long as he is willing to fight, we’ll be right by his side, fighting with him.
With that, 13 Hands is asking the community to consider a donation to support his care. Donations can be made on the Support For Hitch Facebook page.
As of February 4th, they have raised over $3,000 of the $5,000 needed.
