Did You Know Seahorses Live in the Hudson River?

Recently, Hudson Valley natives were shocked to find out that some species of sea creatures call the Hudson River home.

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater shared last week that seahorses can be found in the Hudson River. It blew the minds of many garnering over 15,000 reactions and 4,400 shares on Facebook.

According to Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the Lined Seahorse can live in the Hudson River because the river is an estuary with both freshwater from rivers and streams and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean.

Knowing what we know now about seahorse in the Hudson...we are curious as to what else may be lurking.

What Other Creatures Lurk in The Hudson River?

Have you ever wondered what other creatures are lurking beneath the Hudson River? Well, now's your opportunity to learn!

On Saturday August 2nd, 2025, naturalists will be on hand to celebrate the 14th Annual Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count. During the fish count guests can find out whats actually lurking under the river water.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation explains during this free family friendly event "participants are invited to explore the amazing variety of slippery, wriggly, and fascinating creatures usually hidden below the river’s surface."

Guests can watch from the shores of the Hudson or throw on a pair of waterproof waders and can help pull in the net. Fish will be released after everyone has the opportunity to see them up close and personal.

Where Can You Participate in the Great Hudson River Fish Count 2025?

There are 8 locations across the banks of the Hudson River where you can participate in this years Hudson River Fish Count.

Brooklyn Bridge Park - Pier 4 Beach - 10am - 12pm

Hudson River Park - Pier 51 - 11am - 3pm

Piermont Pier - Hudson River Field Station- 12pm - 4pm

Little Stony Point Beach - Cold Spring - 12pm - TBD

Waryas Park - Poughkeepsie: 2 sessions 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. &  5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. (On the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, tickets must be reserved and are full price) 

Norrie Point Environmental Center, Staatsburg: 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. 

Kingston Point Park Beach, Kingston: 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. 

Peebles Island State Park, Cohoes: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

New York State Free Fishing Days 2025

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the return of New York State's free fishing days for 2025. There are other programs offered like a rod loaner program and a learn to fish program. The license requirement will be waived for freshwater fishing on the following dates:
