West Nile Detected in Mosquitos Near Greenwood Lake

In early August 2025, Orange County Government sent out a press release informing the community about a find in Greenwood Lake.

At the time, County Executive Steve Neuhaus said in a statement that the "first mosquito pool carrying West Nile Virus" was detected in Orange County.

The pool was found near Greenwood Lake as Orange County was in the middle of mosquito surveillance. Now, just a few short weeks later, West Nile has been detected again.

More Mosquitos Carrying West Nile Virus Detected in Orange County, NY

A press release sent out on Friday August 22nd 2025 from the Orange County Government states that West Nile has been detected in mosquitos in Goshen.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said in a statement “This is an important reminder that mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus are present in our region.”

Executive Neuhaus adds that this is an important reminder "that mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus are present in our region." To keep you and your family safe from mosquito bites Dr. Jennifer Roman suggests wearing appropriate clothing and to "consider sprays when outdoors."

The Department of Health also recommends checking your property for stagnant water and these following tips:

  • Minimize outdoor activities between dusk and dawn.
  • Wear shoes and socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when you are outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Consider using mosquito repellent when it is necessary to be outdoors, particularly during evening activities, e.g., fishing. Make sure to follow the directions on the label.

West Nile presents itself in humans in with symptoms like fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash.

 

Follow These Tips To Keep Mosquitos Away From Your Home

The Orange County Department of Health is once again sharing tips to avoid standing water on your property to keep your family safe against West Nile Virus.

According to the Department of Health you should always turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows when they're not being used, change birdbath water twice a week, remove discarded tires from your property and drain pool covers.

They also suggest the following:

  • Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, or similar water-holding containers.
  • Drill drain holes in the bottoms of recycling containers that are kept outdoors.
  • Make sure that your roof gutters drain properly, and clean clogged gutters in the spring and fall..
  • Clean vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds.
  • Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
