Another big name pharmacy is joining Rite Aid and closing select New York stores, including a Hudson Valley location.

The last few months have been unprecedented for some of the major pharmacy chains across the country. Earlier this month we learned that Rite Aid had filed for bankruptcy prompting the company's CEO to announce that they would be either selling or closing all of its 1200+ locations across the U.S. including its 178 stores in New York.

Today, we've learned that another pharmacy chain is closing 54 stores across 17 states.

Walgreens Closing More Stores

Over the last few years, Walgreens has begun to try and turn its struggling business around by restructuring in some markets and closings stores in some areas. Last month we learned that the Walgreens in Ellenville, NY has closed for the final time and now it appears that four more New York stores will be closing soon.

Walgreens Closing Select Stores

According to the Hill, Walgreens is preparing to shutter approximately 54 stores across 17 states including Massachusetts (11), Georgia (5), North Carolina (4), Pennsylvania (4), New York (4), Connecticut (4), Florida (3), California (3), and Ohio (2). Washington, Texas, Colorado, Maryland, Indiana, and Illinois are set to each close one location.

Some of the select stores above are scheduled to close before the end of May, and the others are set to close sometime in late June.

Walgreens Closing in New York

Walgreens is scheduled to close 4 of its over 400 New York locations including the store on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, which is scheduled to close on May 21. The store in New York City, on Lexington Avenue (Duane Reade), will close on June 24 and the store on Genesee Street in Syracuse, NY on, June 26th.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Hudson Valley will lose its second Walgreens this year (Ellenville) as the Walgreens located on Fitzgerald Drive, in Middletown, NY, is scheduled to close on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025.

The Walgreens stores in Poughkeepsie, Highland, Wappingers Falls, New Paltz, Newburgh, NY and more will remain open.
