Venomous Snakes in the Hudson Valley
Here's a fun fact: I'm terrified of snakes, like most people. Another fun fact? New York is home to 16 types of snakes, some of which are venomous, according to the College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
I share this with you because recently a video from 2013 has made a comeback on Facebook..and it has me shook. The video is particularly terrifying because it looks as though a giant rattlesnake is slithering between Mount Beacon and Breakneck, two places of which I frequent here in the Hudson Valley. Take a look:
That's getting a big ol' NOPE from me.
Of course I've seen a Garter Snake in my time, there was even a spring where they were basically mating in my backyard. It was disgusting. But they're harmless. Other less harmless snakes you can find in the Hudson Valley according to the DEC are Timber Rattlesnake (as seen above), Copperhead and Northern Water Snake.
The nice weather is here and people are getting ready to hike through the Hudson Valley, and while most articles say that if you keep your distance from a snake you come across they'll most likely slither away. However, it's always better to be prepared and know that you may come across these little guys on one of your summer hikes.
