A 76-year-old Plattekill man became the first Ulster County resident to die from the novel coronavirus, Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan announced Sunday evening. Ulster County reported 184 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Sunday, including 35 cases in Plattekill, as numbers of cases in New York surpassed 59,000 and included 965 deaths.

“It is with great sadness that I must report that Ulster County has lost our first resident to COVID-19. On behalf of Ulster County, I send my deepest sympathies to the friends and family of the individual that we lost," Ryan said in a press release issued on Sunday. “This serves as a sobering reminder of the severity of the situation and the need for all of us to take all precautions necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19."

The identity of the Plattekill man was not released to preserve the family's privacy, Ulster County said in its press release.

Neighboring Dutchess County had 320 cases as of Sunday, according to the New York State Department of Health numbers. Dutchess County reported two residents had died from the coronavirus: a 71-year-old man died Wednesday, March 25 and a 69-year-old man died Friday, March 20. In Orange County, 1,247 cases of coronavirus were confirmed as of Sunday afternoon. The Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Tracker listed five deaths in Orange County as of Sunday evening.
