Two men were rescued from the Hudson River after their boat capsized. Police say the pair are alive because of their own safety measures.

Officials say the sailboat capsized in the Hudson River around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday near Irvington. Emergency responders raced to the scene after the men sent out a distress call over a U.S. Coast marine radio channel.

When responders arrived they found two men, around 30-years-old, hanging onto the capsized boat. Both men, one from Dobbs Ferry the other from New Jersey, were wearing life vests, reports Patch.

Both men were pulled from the river and the 16-foot Hobi Cat Sailboat was recovered before it sank. Neither were injured and both men declined medical attention. The boat was towed back to shore.

Police say the safety measures the pair took before setting sail, wearing life vests and a having working marine radio, helped in their rescue.
