Just weeks from graduation, one local high school senior died in a major car accident. A classmate is in critical condition.

On Wednesday around 2:30 p.m., New York State Police from the Poughkeepsie responded to the area of 60 Todd Hill Road in the Town of LaGrange for a reported one-car rollover auto collision.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a Chevy Malibu driven by a 17-year-old Dillon F. Colon of Poughkeepsie was traveling westbound on Todd Hill Road. The vehicle exited the northern shoulder of the road and hit a tree, police say.

Members of the LaGrange Fire Department extricated Colon and his passenger, 17-year-old Ryan J. Mucci of Poughkeepsie, from the car.

Both Arlington High School seniors were transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

On Thursday, Mucci succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash, police say. Colon remains in critical condition.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but speed is believed to be a contributing factor.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation by calling (845) 677-7300.

Counselors will be available for students at the Arlington High School during school hours.

State Police were assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. Also on scene were the LaGrange Fire Department and the Arlington Fire Department.
