103-Year-Old NY College Closing at The End of Academic Year

For the last few weeks, there have been rumblings that the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York was heading for closure.

We then learned that the college was looking for financial aid from New York State and from the city of Albany, which was a cause of concern for many students and faculty.

On the evening of Thursday, November 30th, 2023 information started to trickle out that the college was heading for closure. Unfortunately, that information turned out to be true.

The College of Saint Rose To Close at the end of the 2023-2024 Academic Year

In an email sent out by President Marcia White, the President of Saint Rose, she explained to the Saint Rose community that she didn't want the information to be released in such a manner.

President White went on to write:

It is truly upsetting that this sensitive and highly confidential information was leaked to and shared by the media in advance, particularly since so much of the information that was shared was inaccurate and misleading. It is also truly devastating to know how much unnecessary distress this information has caused our Saint Rose community.

White goes on to confirm the college's closure stating:

As you may have learned, The College of Saint Rose’s Board of Trustees voted today to cease academic instruction after the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.

As for a reason for the closure News 10 ABC in Albany is reporting The College of Saint Rose "said they have faced a significant drop in enrollment since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The school reportedly relies on tuition for 80% of its total budget."

Closure of Saint Rose Heartbreaking For Students, Staff

Of course, a sudden closure like this is shocking and heartbreaking for all of those in the Saint Rose community, President White continues in the statement writing:

The closure of Saint Rose is truly heartbreaking for all of us who care deeply about the history and legacy of this institution and the extraordinary students we serve and have served for 103 years.
