Stimulus Check Scams

As most of us start to receive checks soon, officials are warning about some scams.

According to News 10, the FBI and many other government agencies are warning all of us to protect all of our personal information as we wait to receive our stimulus checks in the next few weeks and months.

Most of us should start to see our checks, which for most should be around $1,200, within the next few weeks according to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.

If you filed last years taxes electronically you might get your money sooner than that and that is why many government officials are warning that scammers are already trying to steal people’s money by contacting them though phone calls, text messages and emails that are asking for personal or financial information.

They also said that most scammers attempt to use "phishing scams" by claiming to be from the government and asking you for your personal information, which once they have, they can be use it to steal money from your bank accounts and/or be used to make unauthorized purchases.

Once your check is deposited in your bank account or mailed to your home address, officials said that you then receive a notice in the mail that will contain a phone number to call if the funds never arrived in your account. They also said that you will receive the notice no later than 15 days after the payment was sent out.
