Sterling Forest Fire is Now Affecting Regular Hunting Season
Many hunters have been looking forward to this weekend. This Saturday, November 16th officially kicks off the gun season, or regular deer hunting season as many call it.
Annual trips have been planned since last year. This weekend in New York is quite a tradition for many hunters. Unfortunately this year, hunters are looking at a few challenges.
Brush Fires Are Displacing Animals in New York
Area brush and forest fires have parts of the deer population displaced from their usual spots. The ongoing fires also cause other challenges for hunters. Recent fires in both the Catskill and Sterling forests will have a direct effect on those areas for hunting.

The Town of Warick has posted a fire update on social media which included a note for hunters. After updating the fire information they then announced that there will be no hunting in Sterling Forest at this time.
....... rifle hunting season opens in the State of New York on Saturday. After consultation with the State Park Commissioner, there will be no hunting in any portion of Sterling Forest State Park until this fire is fully contained. That includes the hunting area north of 17A. (Vsia Facebook Town of Warwick)

To further complicate things numerous fire bans are up including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) issuing a burn ban for the entire state which will stay in place through at least November 30. 2024.
