The New York State Department of Transportation has released the number of snowplow "accidents" involving state-owned snowplows, and the number is shocking.

We can all agree that this winter has been brutal so far. We've already experienced a massive amount of snow and frigid cold temperatures, which have made driving in the Hudson Valley challenging. Lucky for us, we have numerous local transportation departments that have done an amazing job with winter so far, so we can safely drive.

Unfortunately, not all drivers understand how important it is to drive appropriately in winter conditions.

Snowplow "Accidents" in New York

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is pleading with all drivers who decide to hit the road when snowplows are out to drive accordingly.

A recent post on Facebook asked fellow drivers to "STOP HITTING OUR PLOWS". Since the beginning of winter, 64 vehicles have crashed into a NYSDOT snowplow so far, and winter isn't close to being over.

"Let’s be clear. These are not "accidents', said the NYSDOT. "They happen because drivers are going too fast for conditions, following too closely, or trying to pass a more than 10-ton machine that is clearing the road for everyone else."

Snowplow Accidents Cost All New Yorkers

Each time a snowplow is hit by another vehicle, we are putting lives at risk, "Ours and yours", said the NYSDOT. After most accidents, the snowplow involved must be removed from service for repairs, leaving one less plow to clear roads.

If you didn't know, taxpayer dollars are used to repair something that was preventable. So, from one taxpayer to another, slow down and stay back.

Snowplow operators are out clearing roads in the worst conditions so we can get where we need to go safely. The least we can do is not become another obstacle.
