Town of Ulster Police have alerted residents to the fact that the Route 209 bridge that sits on the Town of Ulster and Town of Hurley is closed to all traffic. The bridge crosses over the Esopus Creek and is being replaced by the New York State Department of Transportation.

The closure is planned to last until sometime in August. Motorists are being advised to use the pre-planned detour route. The detour is using Route 28 to Hurley Mountain Road, then to Wynkoop Road back to Route 209. That route takes them by the Hurley Mountain Inn. That’s for drivers coming from the Ulster side. For drivers on the Hurley side, it will be the reverse, Wynkoop Road to Hurley Mountain Road to Route 28, then back onto 209.

According to a report in the Daily Freeman, officials are hoping trucks use the detour route. They are concerned about Main Street in Hurley, which could be used as well for detours. The bridge was built in 1962 and during a June 2017 inspection was deemed structurally deficient.
