The Carters Help Habitat for Nearly Four Decades
The Carter's journey with Habitat for Humanity started in March of 1984 after they left the White House. The Late President and his wife were looking for ways to continue their mission committed to social justice and basic human rights.
They started volunteering with Habitat and continued that service until 2019. Their dedication took them all over the world and the United States. At one point they even joined a group of volunteers in New York City which marked Habitat for Humanity's first Jimmy Carter Work Project which was later renamed the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.
Habitat Dutchess CEO Maureen Lashlee paid tribute yesterday alongside Dutchess County Legislature Chair Will Truit, County Legislator Tony D'Aquanni, and County Legislator Faust.
As we remember President Carter’s servant leadership, we give thanks he chose to put God’s love into action advocating for policies and resources to assure an opportunity for everyone to become a homeowner. He gave of his time, talent, and treasure unselfishly and unceasingly.” (Maureen Brennan Lashlee Habitat Dutchess CEO via press release)
Over the past 30 years, the Carter Work Project has made an impact around the world. It has inspired over 108,000 volunteers both in the U.S. and many other countries. It has helped build, renovate, and repair more than 4,000 Habitat homes. 62 million people around the world have been served by Habitat for Humanity since its founding in 1976.
