The City of Poughkeepsie is in mourning after an early morning accident claimed the life of James Montanino, who was tragically killed after being struck by a motor vehicle while working as a Crossing Guard near a school in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Crossing Guard Killed in Poughkeepsie, NY

72-year-old James Montanino has died after he was struck by a motor vehicle on Monday, September 29th, 2025, at the intersection of Baker and Quaker Streets while working as a Crossing Guard in the area near the Smith Early Learning Center on Church Street.

Poughkeepsie Resident Killed in Tragic Accident

Montanino, a Poughkeepsie resident for more than 40 years and a Crossing Guard since 2024, was fondly remembered by Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers, who released a statement on social media saying,

"The entire City mourns the devastating loss of our dear friend James, who was not only a dedicated colleague but also more significantly a cornerstone to our community. Over the course of his tenure with the City, James served as a role model to his colleagues and superiors alike."

Flowers went on to say that Montanino "rose to every occasion and made the ultimate sacrifice earlier this morning, watching over our children on their way to school." Montanino leaves behind his wife, Rose.

Following the tragic accident, the City of Poughkeepsie, the Poughkeepsie City School District, and Dutchess County officials announced a coordinated effort to make sure that the children and their families affected by this tragedy have the support and resources needed during this difficult time.
