On Monday around 10 a.m., deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department responded to a home on Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley for a domestic. A son stabbed his father at the home and the son still had the weapon on him when police arrived, police say.

While trying to use a taser to stop him the man stabbed a seven-year office, officials say. The unnamed deputy suffered a severed artery and was rushed to the hospital for surgery.

The surgery repaired the severed artery and the deputy is expected to survive, though additional surgeries may be necessary, police say.

The son was later identified as Timothy Redmond who was remanded to Putnam County Jail, ABC reports.

Police told ABC this is the first time an officer from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department suffered a life-threatening attack.
