Multiple communities that get their drinking water supply from the Hudson River have come together for more water protections. Roughly 100,000 people depend on the River for drinking water.

Riverkeeper, a watchdog clean water advocate, reports that 7 different communities. The city of Poughkeepsie, Town of Poughkeepsie, Town of Hyde Park, Town of East Fishkill, Village and Town of Rhinebeck, Town of Lloyd, and Town of Esopus all rely on the Hudson River for their public drinking water supply.

The full report details multiple issues and potential solutions to protect the Hudson River. The report calls for more updated data on the river, saying that some data is based on land from 25 years ago. It also calls for updated data to assess the possibility of an oil spill from boat activity on the River. In the event of an oil spill, drinking water reserves would run out in 12 hours.

Riverkeeper hopes that this major report, backed by the 7 municipalities, will make the Hudson River more attractive for state grant money.
