Older Driver Safety Week New York

Every older driver in New York should follow these rules while driving!

As the year winds down and we prepare to ring in the new year many of us will find ourselves spending more time driving from one place to another than anything else. Most of us have family and friends who we are planning to visit at some point this month and to get there we will need to drive. We won't be alone as more people of all ages are expected to be on the roads over the next few weeks than at any other time of the year.

With that in mind, the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee of New York has announced the official kick-off of "Older Driver Safety Week". A week the committee dedicates to sharing tips and advice for older drivers in New York.

Older Driver Safety Week in New York

According to the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee of New York's Facebook page, the Older Driver Safety Week will run from December 2nd through Friday, December 6th, and will be a week filled with safety tips for older drivers, their families, and caregivers. We do think they may have missed a few important tips (below) but they started the week off telling older drivers that they should only drive in daylight hours and not at dawn, dusk, or at night when it is more difficult for a driver to see.

They also recommend older drivers avoid driving during "rush hours" and other peak traffic hours, as well as muting their cell phones and never eating while driving.

Older Driver Tips That New York Needs to Follow

I think it's a great time to remind older drivers that they should always look in all directions before they slam down on the gas pedal to pull out of a driveway or parking space. I've almost been taken out a few times in the last couple of weeks by an older driver who just goes when they're ready without looking to see if anyone is coming in their direction. On the flip side if an older driver is overly cautious and drives really slow that is also really dangerous, so please drive the speed limit.

We would also like to ask ALL drivers to get in the habit of using their blinkers, there's a reason your car has them and if you decide to drive at night please also remember to always lower your high beams when you approach any other vehicles.
