Upstate, NY Pup Falls Through Ice While on Walk
It's every dog owners nightmare. Your dog falls through the ice and you can't get to them.
That's what happened to one dog owner in Little Falls New York on January 10th, 2026. The New York State Police shared that around 8:30 am that day they responded to to Industrial Park to assist the Little Falls Police and Fire Departments after a woman and her dog fell through the ice.
Someone passing by called 9-1-1 to report the incident. In the press release the New York State Police explain that preliminary investigation "determined that the woman had been walking her Labrador Bernese Mountain Dog mix when the dog approached the water and fell in."
The woman fell in while attempting to save her dog.
Body Cam Footage Captures Dog Rescue in Upstate, NY
Little Falls police officers and firefighters were able to get the woman out of the water safely.
However, getting the dog out of the frozen body of water proved more difficult. The dog was having trouble staying submerged that's when New York State Trooper Michael Szarek jumped into action.
Trooper Szarek "deployed a water rescue rope, which the dog attempted to grab multiple times." After multiple failed attempts Trooper Szarek and Officer Austin entered the water to "successfully secure and rescue the dog."

Thankfully the woman and her dog were safely brought to shore with no serious injuries.
