The New York Senate has endorsed changes to the landmark gun control law, that was passed back in 2012, following the Sandy Hook shooting.

The changes that the senate endorsed allow a family member to inherit certain types of semi-automatic firearms when their owner dies and make pistol permit applications exempt from open records laws, as reported by CBS Albany.

The Senate's vote was 35-26. Among the changes would include a repeal of a requirement that every purchaser of ammunition undergo a background check. The bill, sponsored by state Sen. James Seward, a central New York Republican whose district includes the major gun manufacturing plant owned by Remington Arms.

Another reform would give counties and the state Division of Criminal Justice Services more oversight of the license recertification process, not State Police, as reported by Democrat & Chronicle.
