According to the Daily Freeman, the Margaretville School district may have to cancel their annual donkey basketball game because of community uproar and pressure from animal rights activists who say that its cruel to the donkeys. The game, if played, will feature school officials and community members playing basketball while riding donkeys in a gym. The school has been holding this event for years as a fundraiser for the district’s Honor Society.

Superintendent of Schools John Riedl told the Daily Freeman on Tuesday that he doesn’t want the district caught in the middle of an animal rights debate and therefore might cancel the game, which is scheduled for April 9 in the high school gym.
