The New York State police have announced that one of its own, a retired K9, has passed away.

The New York State Police (NYSP) have confirmed that one of its retired canines has sadly passed away at the age of 11.

New York State Police K9 Passes Away

According to a recent post on the NYSP Facebook page, retired K9 Longo passed away on Monday, May 19th, 2025.

"It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of retired K9 Longo, who died on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the age of 11."

 

The post explained that K9 Longo served with distinction for years alongside retired Trooper Carl W. Parow. Longo was last assigned to patrol the New York State Thruway in Schuyler.

The New York State Thruway Authority shared condolences for the loss of K9 Longo, saying,

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to our partners at the New York State Police for the loss of K9 Longo. Thank you for your service to New York and keeping the Thruway safe. 💙🐾"

K9 Longo Remembered

Each K9 in the NYSP has the honor of being named after a trooper who was killed in the line of duty. K9 Longo was named in honor of Trooper Joseph A. Longobardo, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on September 3, 2006, while pursuing an escaped convict.

K9 Longo was trained in numerous specialties, including narcotics detection, tracking, and handler protection. "She dedicated her career to keeping our communities safe and remained a loyal companion to her partner in retirement," said the NYSP.

"She will be deeply missed by her family, her former partner, and all who had the honor to serve alongside her. Rest easy, K9 Longo. We have the watch from here."

 

Rest in peace, K9 Longo, and thank you for your service.
