Cell Phones Banned in New York Schools

Back in April, we learned that New York lawmakers had approved a cell phone ban at all New York schools. The "bell-to-bell" plan bans students from accessing and using any internet-enabled device (cell phone, smart watch, tablet) during school hours. The ban aims to remove the distraction some children experience by having their cellphones with them during school hours. Most schools have selected various ways to enforce the ban, with some providing phone pouches and others asking students to leave their phones at home.

Metal Cups Banned at Schools in Middletown, New York

The Middletown School District has announced that all students in grades 6-12 will now be prohibited from bringing stainless steel travel cups into their respective buildings when the 2025-26 school year begins on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025. The district made the announcement on social media, stating,

"This is a proactive decision, as we don’t want to wait until someone gets hurt. This decision is about protecting scholars and keeping our schools safe, welcoming and focused on learning."

Students will still be allowed to bring refillable "plastic water bottles and clear lightweight school-safe cups" into schools. Middletown is the second school district to ban the metal cups in the last year.

Newburgh, NY Schools Ban Metal Cups

Back in May, the acting Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Lisa Buon, at the Newburgh Enlarged City School District announced that the district was prohibiting students from bringing any aluminum/stainless steel drinking containers to any of the district's schools. The ban went into effect on May 13th, 2025, after safety issues were discovered within the district.
