New York State Thruway Announced Another Bridge Teardown
It looks like another bridge will be coming down that crosses over the New York State Thruway. This time the bridge is in Newburgh.
Meadow Hill Road Bridge was erected in 1953. The New York State Thruway Authority says the bridge has reached the end of its service life. You may recall earlier this year that the Brookside Road Bridge in Ulster County was removed.

In the case of the Brookside Bridge, it was actually sinking and causing it to be struck by trucks. After numerous incidents, the bridge was deemed structurally unsound. It was closed to travel and then taken down in early 2024.
The Meadow Hill Road bridge seems to be a different situation. In the case of Meadow Hill Road, the bridge is being repaired. The Brookside Bridge is in limbo at the moment with apparently no timeline for its reconstruction.

The New York State Thruway Authority is starting the process for the Meadow Hill Bridge with a public information session which will be held from 4 PM to 7 PM on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024. The bridge is a gateway to many who live work and go to school in that area so a complete closure could be tough.
In a press release dated October 2, 2024, The New York State Thruway Authority explained the goal of replacing the bridge and its benefits.
Safety improvements on the new bridge will include replacing the deteriorating bridge deck, steel, and substructure, widening its shoulders, adding a sidewalk, installing new bridge railings, and increasing the vertical clearance over the Thruway by more than two feet to 16 feet 10 inches. At the public information session, renderings will be shared, information will be available and the Thruway Autority will have representatives there to answer questions. The Meeting will be held in the Newburgh Town Hall Meeting Room at 1496 State Route 300 in Newburgh.
