Police are currently investigating a murder suicide that happened within hours of each other on Wednesday in Kingston, New York.

According to a City of Kingston Police Department press release, officers from the Town of Ulster Police Department were in the process of attempting to notify a family about one tragedy, when they made another tragic discovery.

Man Jumps From Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge

Police explained that it all started around noontime on Wednesday, April 23rd, when the Town of Ulster Police Department (UPD) was called to the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge for a report that a person had jumped from the span.

Body Recovered from Hudson River

Upon arrival, authorities began an investigation and soon after were able to recover a body from the Hudson River, which they believed to be the person who had jumped earlier. Police later identified the person as 45-year-old Caleb Smith of Kingston, NY.

Soon after identifying the body, officers proceeded to try and notify Smith's family at a house located at 82 Fair Street in Kingston.

Tragic Discovery in Kingston, NY

As officers arrived at the house, they discovered what appeared to be a deceased woman inside the house. The woman was later identified as 37-year-old Kaleigh Griffin, who was married to Caleb Smith. Ulster Police then contacted the City of Kingston Police to begin a joint investigation.

Police have stated that all evidence in this case indicates that shortly before Smith jumped from the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, he stabbed and killed his wife. Police didn't provide any other information but did say that the couple is parents to two young children who are safe and being cared for by family members.
