Just for a minute, picture yourself as an animal is one of our local rescue shelters here in the Hudson Valley.

While it's great that they have a safe, dry place to stay and plenty of food, these animals do spend a decent amount of time indoors in their kennels.

One would think they probably have a lot of pent up energy.

How Taking Your Dog on a Run Can Benefit Their Life

Obviously, having a healthy and happy dog is the main goal as a dog owner. Purina explains that what's good for humans like working out and running can also be good for our 4-legged friends.

They explain on their website writing "Keeping your dog fit and healthy is the best way to avoid expensive vet bills in the future"  and it improves their mood as most dogs are born to run.

Getting dogs outside on a running trail exposes them to sights, sounds and smells of the outdoors and they're getting quality time with their human. It doesn't get much better than that!

The website also explains taking your dog on a run can also help with destructive behavior as it tires them out and fills in the pockets of boredom they may be suffering from.

Burn Off Energy With a Cute Pup During Runnin' with Rescues Thursday

Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess County is taking all of the above mentioned information into consideration and hoping local runners can help out with their new initiative: Runnin' With Rescues.

On social media CARE of DC announced that every Thursday, starting on May 8th, from 5 pm until 8 pm volunteers can take one of their rescue pups out for a run.

They write "Not only will you get a great workout, but you’ll be helping shelter dogs burn off energy, reduce stress, and build confidence."

Runners can sign up on a Google Doc that has been provided by CARE of DC. Once you sign up the next thing you need to do is show up.

Runnin' With Rescues runs Thursday, May 8th, 2025 from 5pm until 8pm at 60 Smith Crossing Road in Wappingers Falls. Any questions or concerns can be text to the following number: 845-235-9374.

Doggy Day Out at CARE of DC

CARE of DC does a phenomenal job, year round, of working with volunteers to give their shelter dogs a taste of home life.

Every few months they will host Doggy Day Out where volunteers can take a dog out of the shelter for a day where they can run, play, sleep and eat with the volunteers for a few hours.

While the shelter is cleared, CARE of DC staff gives the kennels and shelter a deep clean. In some cases, the dogs that are taken out for Doggy Day out get adopted by the volunteers who took them for the day.
