Sometimes local officials can surprise us in a great way that really helps in a time of need and according to News 10, that is exactly what some elected board members did for some residents in one New York village.

Residents of the village of Coxsackie have recently started to receive letters in the mail stating that the village is going to pay for their water and sewer bill this month. One of the lucky residents, Robert Van Wie told News 10 that, “The village turned around and took care of my water bill, which was very good. I mean, I appreciate that! It was very, very thoughtful on their behalf. Especially with what everybody is up against.”

The mayor of the small village, Mark Evans said that some residents have been struggling financially because of the pandemic and they wanted top help any way they could. With that in mind, about six weeks ago a town trustee suggested the idea of the village picking up the tab on water and sewer costs for a month and after a vote it got done. Evans did say that "it was a pretty easy decision to make."

Evans also stated that the typical water and sewer bill for their area can cost anywhere between $100 and $200 dollars for a 3 month period and after doing the math they could make it work. Evans said, "It’s several hundred thousands of dollars in costs to us, but our water and sewer funds are in good shape to be able to sustain that impact, and still be in very good financial shape."

Coxsackie is a small village located in Greene County that is well known for the Greene County Correctional facility and one of the funnier names of a town in the state of New York. But now it needs to be recognized and a town doing the right thing by it's residents in a time of need.

Here's to hoping that more towns in the area follow the lead of Coxsackie and do the same.
