Illegal ATV/Dirt Bike Riders Causing Concerns in the Hudson Valley
As warmer weather starts creeping back into the Hudson Valley, one issue that seems to return right along with it is illegal ATV and dirt bike activity on local streets, and police in Poughkeepsie are making it clear they’re not ignoring it.
Illegal ATV & Dirt Bike Complaints Return in Poughkeepsie, NY
Over the last few years, numerous communities across the Hudson Valley have seen a noticeable uptick in complaints about riders driving unregistered ATVs and dirt bikes on public roads. In many of those cases, drivers say they aren’t just riding—they’re weaving through traffic, ignoring traffic laws, and even pulling off dangerous stunts in the middle of busy streets.

Unfortunately, this isn’t anything new. Year after year, reports like this start piling up across the region, with many residents saying the riders are “driving like maniacs” and putting everyone around them at risk. Now, with spring arriving and more people heading outdoors, the issue is once again front and center.
Police Say Enforcement Will Continue Across Poughkeepsie
The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department has announced that it will continue targeting illegal riders throughout the city, with a focus on keeping roads safe for everyone. In a recent post on Facebook, the department said:
"With the warmer weather approaching, this is a reminder that it is illegal to operate unregistered dirt bikes, ATVs, and mini-bikes on city streets, sidewalks, or in parks. These vehicles pose a threat to their operators, pedestrians, and other motorists."
Those caught riding illegally can expect to be ticketed—and in many cases, lose their vehicle altogether. Police say they’ve already impounded multiple bikes just within the last week as part of ongoing enforcement efforts.
