100 Dogs Rescued in Awful NYC Hoarding Situation

On Thursday June 26th, 2025, officials in New York City rescued over 100 dogs from an awful hoarding situation. According to People.com, NYC police found a 73-year-old woman "unconscious and unresponsive on the ground floor" of the Brooklyn home.

When officers entered the home they also found what they first described as "a large amount of dogs" inside.

There were over 100 dogs found in the apartment found in deplorable conditions. Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) was the first rescue on the scene assisting in getting the dogs out.

The dogs were living in filth, walking on floors caked in dirt and feces, and many of the pups were found severely matted. Unfortunately, there were some dogs who didn't make it out of the Brooklyn apartment alive.

At one point, a dog who was being taken out of the apartment gave birth in the rescuers arms.

New York rescues stepped up to help in anyway they could including 2 Hudson Valley based rescues.

2 Hudson Valley Rescues Take in 40 Rescue Dogs

As news started to spread of the dogs being saved, 2 Hudson Valley rescues stepped up to help.

Hudson Valley Animal Rescue Sanctuary writes on Facebook that they recieved a call from Compassionate Animal Rescue of Dutchess County alerting them to the situation. In a statement on Facebook HVARS writes "Within hours, two rescue organizations came together to accomplish something incredible"

In total the 2 rescues took in 40 dogs together. This will be a "massive undertaking that will require weeks, even months, of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and resources" according to the post.

They add:

Our teams have been working around the clock to stabilize these dogs — providing urgent veterinary care and medically necessary grooming to ease years of suffering and neglect.

How to Help HVARS & CARE of DC With New Rescues

As mentioned above, taking in this many dogs in the severe state they are in is quite the undertaking.

Bother HVARS and CARE of DC will need donations and supplies to help care for these dogs. Supplies like newspapers, towels, and sheets. Donations can be made to HVARS.org and CAREofDC.org.

Other local businesses have stepped up to help as well, such as Pampered Pooch Grooming & Boutique. The dog grooming business "stepped up without hesitation — grooming and bathing dozens of dogs."
