Will Cicadas Invade the Hudson Valley in 2025?
Slowly, but surely, Spring is making itself known across New York State. While we enjoy 60 + degree days in March, we also prepare for what the warmer weather will bring.
Are we ready for bugs to make their way back to the region?
When Will Cicadas Arrive in New York for the 2025 Season?
There are a handful of bugs that we can think of when it comes to summer and spring. But cicadas are always a hot topic of conversation.
It looks like cicadas will indeed return for the 2025 spring and summer months.
According to the Farmers Almanac, there's a specific point during the spring when the noisy bugs emerge. The Farmers Almanac explains "Whenever the trees are just about leafed out, that’s when the cicadas emerge." They also add when the soil temperatures reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit, Cicadas will "emerge in a massive wave, transforming into big-eyed, winged adults."
What Brood Of Cicada Will Emerge in New York This Year?
Last year, a rare "double brood" emerged in mid-April due to "unseasonably warm and rainy days." This year the Farmers' Alamac predicts cool temperatures throughout April 2025, so they say "periodical cicadas are expected to emerge in mid-May, which would be customary."
Which periodical cicadas should we expect in New York?
The Farmers Almanac says Brood 14 will not only show up in NY but New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.
Why Do Cicadas Make That Awful Sound?
Cicadas are noisy creatures, but why do they make that awful sound?
According to Noisy Planet, they make that sound to attract a mate. The male cicadas use a loud buzzing sound using "tymbals" on their abdomen to call out to female cicadas nearby.
The loud sound "helps ensure females can easily locate them for reproduction."
Can someone tell the male cicadas to take it down, just a notch. Believe me, the ladies hear you!
