How to Properly Celebrate National Donut Day in The Hudson Valley
June 7th marks National Donut Day and there are a ton of ways to celebrate.
The History of The Donut and National Donut Day
You can't properly celebrate National Donut Day without learning a little bit about the delicious fried treat.
According to Britannica, cultures from across the world have been enjoying fried dough for centuries. They believe that the earliest donuts date back to "prehistoric Native American settlements."
With that being said, Britannica writes "The history of the doughnut itself is generally traced to Dutch immigrants in 17th- and 18th-century New York, then New Netherland."
They prepared friend dough balls which they called "olie koeken or olykoeks"...translation: oil cakes. Theoe oil cakes are very similar to doughnuts but didn't have the circular, ring shape yet. I don't know about you, but doughnut sounds much better than oil cakes.
National Donut Day began back in 1938 as a fundraising opportunity to honor the Donut Lassies. Donut Lassies handed out donuts to soldiers in World War One.
