I am sure I am not alone when I say I wish I could help get every animal that is waiting in a shelter a forever home. Fortunately in the Hudson Valley, we have many dedicated shelters and rescues that care for animals while they wait to be adopted.

Back when I was looking to add a dog to my family I kept an eye on the shelters and finally adopted my Minnie Pearl from Pets Alive in Middletown. Sadly Pearl left us this year after almost 16 years of love and playful excitement. As much as I would love to open my home to another pet it just isn't the right time.

For many people who love animals, pet ownership isn't in the cards but that doesn't mean you can't help an animal waiting at a shelter until they find their forever family. So many shelters and rescues offer programs that you can participate in to help support an animal while they wait.

Just today the Ulster County SPCA shared a story about a kitten named Stout who will soon be available for adoption. In the meantime Stout is being sponsored by a Hudson Valley business, Arrowood Farms Brewery and Distillery.

The story of how Stout was found by one of Arrowood Farms' delivery drivers in the middle of busy Route 209 on an icy day will pull at your heartstrings. Fortunately, Stout was recovered from the road safely and is being cared for at the UCSPCA.

Ways to Help Animals at the Ulster County SPCA

After reading about Stout I went online to UCSPCA.org to find out more about how you can sponsor an animal. Turn out there is a cool program where you can be a Pet Pal. it can be a monthly donation or a one-time gift. Being a Pet Pal means you support the animal living at the shelter for as little as $50 a month.

Volunteering at the UCSPCA and fostering an animal are two more ways you can help. The UCSPCA does what it needs to do to keep the shelter open and because it is a no-kill shelter some of the pets can be there for a while.

Another great way to support an animal waiting at the UCSPCA is to visit their Thrift Shop in Saugerties. Happy Paws is located at 282 Main Street in Saugerties and is open for shopping Monday, Wednesday through Sunday 12-4 pm. Saturday is open till 5 pm. They are closed on Tuesdays.

If you aren't in Ulster County there are most likely similar programs at an ASPCA or shelter near you. Being a pet sponsor can be as rewarding as being a pet parent and may be more important in helping our area shelters keep doing their amazing work for animals in our community.

Hudson Valley Pets

Pets can be product spokesanimals in this age of social media. Nationally they earn hundreds of thousands of dollars. So we asked Hudson Valley pet parents what their fur baby could endorse. Here are just a few of the many who responded. Good luck to those who want to be an InFURencer
