New York State Police Sergeant Killed in Accident

Last week, we shared the tragic news that a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police tragically died in an early morning motorcycle accident while traveling on the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill, NY.

49-year-old Sergeant Nigel K. Barnett of Poughkeepsie, NY, was killed on Tuesday morning, September 16th, after the motorcycle he was operating crashed on the southbound side of the Taconic State Parkway in the Town of East Fishkill at approximately 6:31 a.m.

Following the crash, law enforcement agencies across New York State shared condolences on social media, honoring Barnett and his service. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also expressed "heartbreak" in a posting,

"Today, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of Sergeant Nigel K. Barnett of New York State Police Troop K. A 19-year veteran and Station Commander, he dedicated his life to service and sacrifice. My deepest condolences to his loved ones and colleagues."

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered that American flags on all state government buildings be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, to honor the tragic passing of a member of the New York State Police.

Wake/Funeral Times for Sergeant Nigel K. Barnett

The wake was hosted at McHoul Funeral Home, located at 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY, on Wednesday. The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Faith Assembly of God, at 25 Golf Club Lane, Poughkeepsie, NY.

New York State Police Canine Unit

Here is a partial list of the New York State Police K9 Unit. This division was created in 1975. The original three canines were put into service as explosives detection canines in preparation for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York.

New York State Police canines are named in honor of the men and women of the state police who have died in the line of duty.
