Five of the New York ShopRite grocery stores that recently closed have been sold to a new owner.

Back in October, we told you that ShopRite was preparing to close numerous of their grocery stores across New York state. The reasons for the various store closures were unclear at the time but appeared to be centered around underperforming stores and the cost of store leases.

ShopRite Closes New York Stores

Five of the ShopRite stores that were set to close first were stores located in northern New York including stores in Albany, Colonie, Niskayuna, Slingerlands, and North Greenbush. Those five stores closed for good on November 18th and according to News 10, those stores already have new owners.

Price Chopper/Market 32 Buys ShopRite Stores in New York

Price Chopper and Market 32 have officially finalized purchasing all of the five former ShopRite stores in the Capital Region. The purchases include all of the store's building leases, equipment, and fixtures. The company hasn't revealed plans for all five locations yet but has confirmed that they are planning to convert the Niskayuna and North Greenbush locations into Market 32 grocery stores. They are still determining what they will do with the Albany and Colonie locations.

Price Chopper/Market 32 Expanding in New York

Some are wondering why Price Chopper/Market 32 would buy stores that seemed to be underperforming and closed down. Price Chopper/Market 32 president, told News 10,

"Our Market 32 brand has been extremely well received and this gives us an excellent opportunity to expand our footprint in the Capital Region, provide our customers with the shopping experience they are looking for, and our teammates with career growth opportunities right here in our hometown."
