Didn’t we agree to get rid of this? I guess not.

It’s almost time to switch those clocks once again for daylight savings time.

I know what you’re thinking…didn’t we agree that we were done with this?

We thought so too.

The clocks will be set forward one hour to “spring ahead” on Sunday, March 12 at 2:00 AM. This means you will lose an hour of sleep.

Which makes you wonder why we even have Daylight Saving Time…is it worth it to lose an hour of sleep?

The main reason we have Daylight Saving Time is to make better use of daylight. Daylight in the evening makes it safer for joggers, people walking dogs, children playing outside in the yard, mowing the lawn, and more. Having Daylight Saving Time allows drivers to see people more easily, too.

A lot of people tend to blame farmers as a result of Daylight Saving Time, but did you know that the leading group against the shift of time…is made up of farmers? Back in 1918, when the Standard Time Act of 1918 added more daylight hours to conserve energy resources, the agricultural industry protested against it.

Daylight Saving Time became a huge problem for farmers who followed the sun to tell the time of day, inadvertently pushing them away from their urban roots.

But will they ever do away with Daylight Saving Time?

In 1974, President Richard Nixon attempted to make daylight saving time a year-round thing, but it was repealed by Congress only a few months later, following protests that mornings stayed dark past 9 AM. It caused many people to have a negative start to the day, so much so that it pushed Congress to repeal the act.

Now, the decision is up in the air once again. The Sunshine Protection Act is proposing to end the biannual time shift, and the act already passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate. It awaits a vote in the House of Representatives.

Will this be the last year for Daylight Saving Time? Only time will tell (literally).
