Residents of Hyde Park, NY in Dutchess County may have a rude awakening this week when they turn on their taps. "Turbid" and discolored water is predicted for several hours between April 18th and 22nd for several neighborhoods. The good news is that it's on purpose.

Discolored Water in Hyde Park, NY

In a press release from the Dutchess County Water and Wastewater Authority (DCWWA), Hyde Park residents were warned to avoid using water to drink, shower, or wash clothes if they notice discoloration between 8am and 4pm, and potentially up to three hours afterwards from Monday through Friday of this week. But why?

Waterpipe Flushing in Dutchess County, NY

"Distribution Flushing", or more simply, flushing the waterpipes, is a necessary practice the DCWWA says needs to be done as a maintenance precaution to preserve the health of the water system and uphold pipe conditions. Just like our cars need periodic checks, inspections, and even the occasional flush, it's similarly necessary for the distribution of our water supply.

What to Expect when You're Expecting (Water Flushing)

When pipes are flushed, debris from the pipes are disrupted and removed. "Turbid", the word used to describe a potential characteristic of the flushed water, is defined as liquid that is "cloudy, opaque, or thick with suspended matter." Gross. No wonder it's recommended not to wash your clothes during flushing hours. Check out more details on the flush, including what streets will be affected below.
