The sad news spread quickly this afternoon that the world had lost Country Music Icon Merle Haggard. Merle turned 79 today and passed away earlier this afternoon. He had 40 number one songs, was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and received numerous awards from the ACMs, CMAs, and the Grammys. His nickname was 'The Poet of the Working Man.'

Many of today's Country stars, list Merle as an inspiration and friend. All were fans and they took to Twitter, and other social media outlets to offer their thoughts.

Vince Gill, who, along with his pal Paul Franklin, released the Bakersfield album in 2013, a collaborative tribute of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens songs, shared his thoughts with this video.

Thank you Merle for sharing your talents and voice with us. May you rest in peace.
