Swim season is upon us and the scariest part is not you in your bathing suit. The scariest part is how many accidents occur around a pool during the summer season. The group poolsafely.gov reports that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children 1 to 4 years of age according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). It can't be stressed enough how important it is to secure your pool and teach children water safety.

It is also a good idea to speak to a pool professional about options for equipping your pool with pool alarms and safety equipment. Both your children and your pets can quickly find themselves in trouble at the pool and having your pool equipped properly can make the difference in how the situation turns out.

Local swim clubs offer lessons for children just starting out, check with your town or school swim team about safety classes. When you are shopping for your pool be sure to ask about the proper safety equipment for the pool. Having the correct safety equipment can save you money on your insurance and also may be required by your home owners policy.

Your local animal shelter or ASPCA can help you with tips to keep your pets safe. It is important pets know how and where to exit the pool if they unexpectedly end up in it. This goes with out saying for your kids. And if you are traveling to the shore this year try to find a class during your beach stay that can teach your children about water safety at the beach. Local lifeguard stations are always a good source for that information.
